COMELEC to review Smartmatic contract amid “security breach issue”

The Elections Commission (COMELEC) will review its contract with Smartmatic Inc. following a suspected breach of system security by service providers ahead of the 2022 election.

It was commissioned by COMELEC chairman Saidamen Pangarungan.

Senate Speaker Vicente “Tito” Sotto III had earlier said that employees involved in suspected security breaches of his system were already under surveillance by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

Pangarungan also directed the COMELEC to contact the NBI and get a copy of its report on the Smartmatic system.

In addition, the plaintiff also ordered Smartmatic to report the matter for its own investigation.

It also told the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to make a plan to prevent security breaches or similar incidents.
